BABY EQUIPMENT: THE MUST-HAVES
WHAT SHOULD NOT BE MISSED
WHAT BELONGS IN THE BABY LAYETTE
Even before your child is born, you should give some thought to the initial equipment. In addition to baby clothes, food & co., there are a few basics that should not be missing in your baby's everyday life.
Are you still looking for ideas for your shopping list? Then take a look at the NICKIS.com checklist for baby layette!

1. CLOTHING: BABY'S FIRST WARDROBE
Oh, how cute! Adorable baby clothes simply put a smile on everyone's face. Parents in particular can't get enough of the little socks, hats and rompers and would ideally like to put everything in their shopping cart.
But wait - babies don't need that much in the first few months:
- 4 to 6 wrap bodysuits in sizes 50 to 62 (long-sleeved and/or short-sleeved depending on the season)
- 4 to 6 rompers in size 50 to 62
- 6 tops in size 50 to 62 (T-shirts and/or sweaters depending on the season)
- 6 cardigans in size 50 to 62
- 3 to 4 pairs of thin and 3 to 4 pairs of thick socks
- 1 to 2 pairs of tights
- 2 hats
- 1 to 2 jackets (thick and/or thin depending on the season)
- 3 to 4 pull-on pants
- 3 to 4 pajamas
- 1 sleeping bag
- 1 pair of gloves for winter
The most important thing about baby fashion is that it is functional and of high quality. Choose comfortable clothing made from soft, natural materials such as cotton, wool or silk. These are ideal for your baby's sensitive skin and keep your little one nice and warm. At the same time, they allow baby's skin to breathe so that your little one doesn't sweat.
Wide necklines and clever opening options at the shoulders and crotch make it easy to put on and take off clothes and change diapers. To remove any harmful substances from the materials, you should also wash baby clothes before wearing them for the first time.

2. THE MOST IMPORTANT ACCESSORIES FOR BABY CARE
When it comes to baby care, "less is more." In the first few weeks after birth, baby's delicate skin is still very sensitive, so warm water and a soft washcloth are perfectly sufficient for washing.
After a few months, you can expand the baby's initial equipment with a few care items:
- Baby bathtub
- Bath thermometer
- Baby nail scissors
- Soft baby brush
- 5 to 10 washcloths or wipes
- 2 hooded bath towels
- Fever thermometer
For changing, a proper changing station is a must. It is best to set it up on a changing table or changing chest of drawers, so you have all the necessary utensils at hand in one place. When buying the chest of drawers or table, make sure it is stable and corresponds to your height.

Drawers or baskets that you place under or on the shelf provide sufficient storage space. The basic changing equipment also includes:
- Washable, padded changing mat
- 4 to 5 flannel cloths as a base
- Diapers
- Moist wipes
- Diaper rash cream
- Sealable diaper pail
- Baby oil
- possibly heat lamp
3. INITIAL EQUIPMENT FOR BREASTFEEDING AND FEEDING
For your child to grow big and strong, proper nutrition is essential. Especially in the first six months, breastfeeding the baby is very important, as breast milk provides all the essential nutrients your little one needs for their development.
From the fifth month, the baby can slowly be fed complementary food, and breastfeeding is gradually replaced. To make breastfeeding as comfortable as possible for you and your child, the following items belong in the baby's initial equipment:
- 2 to 3 nursing bras
- at least 1 nursing pillow
- Nursing tops
- Nursing pads
- Breast pump
- Nursing cover
- Nipple cream
- 4 to 6 burp cloths
If breastfeeding doesn't work out or you don't want to breastfeed, you can feed your child formula. You can use the following items for this:
- 6 bottles made of plastic or glass with age-appropriate nipples
- Bottle brush
- Thermos flask

4. BABY'S ESSENTIALS FOR ON THE GO
Immediately after birth, you and your baby probably won't leave the house very often. But when it's time for the first shared walks outside, you shouldn't do without a few helpers:
- Baby car seat
- Stroller with rain and/or sun protection
- Diaper bag
- Footmuff
- Blanket
- Baby carrier or sling
- Toys for on the go

THE MUST-HAVES FOR THE BABY ROOM
Designing baby's first own realm is one of the absolute highlights for many expectant parents in the time before birth. Whether you furnish it yourself or order a complete room - these baby essentials should definitely not be missing:
- Baby bed
- Bassinet/baby cradle
- Mattress
- Fitted sheets and bedding
- Music box and mobile
- Baby monitor
- Playmat
- Indirect night light
- First toys (rattle, grasping toy, etc.)
HOW MUCH DOES THE BABY LAYETTE COST?
Rompers, changing equipment & Co. can be quite expensive - as a rule, the first year of life is also the most expensive. In total, you should expect to pay around 1,500 to 2,500 Euros for the baby's initial equipment.
However, there are of course no upper limits here.
